Putting tips for beginners.

If you ask a dozen players for driving tips you will hear the same few tips from all of them… if you ask a dozen players for putting tips you will get about 10 answers. Use the tips which are helpful, ignore those which are not.

1.   Practice closer to the basket. Many pros practice putting for hours 30 feet or more from the basket…. But if you are a new player who practice for 5 to 10 minutes a few times a week… I suggest practicing mostly in the 15 to 20 feet range. Most games for newer players are won by making those three or four 20 foot putts rather than that one great 50 foot putt.

2.   For very new players I suggest putt soft [so your putt will be within 5 feet past the basket if you miss]. You don’t want to “nutty putt” where you are putting back and forth a few times… after you get more confidant you want to start putting harder… a hard putt will put you further from the basket if you miss but you are more likely to make the putt the first time.

3.   Focus on a small part of the basket.

4.   Don’t necessarily make the orange stripe you focus point

a.   Not all baskets have the orange stripe
b.   The orange stripe is higher and lower on different baskets.
c.   It may not be your best focal point

5.   The link method works for many. First focus on the center link. Putt a dozen times while noting where the disc is hitting the target. If you are putting low pick a higher link, if you are putting to the left pick a link to the right, etc.
