« on: March 18, 2010, 03:31:27 PM »
The time has come for us to host an A tier PDGA sanctioned tournament in the St. Cloud area.  This year on August 28 & 29 the North Star Throwdown will be happening and it will be awesome.  This tournament will take the place of the Millstream Open that I have been running the last couple years.
For more information please check out the website at www.northstarthrowdown.com
We will have pre-registration available in the coming weeks on the PDGA website or off the tournament website via mail.

We now have North Star Throwdown fundraiser t-shirts for purchase.  You can buy them from Amanda or Mike Henry or Dan Jacobs.  They're really awesome and will help bring in more cash to the tournament.  Pricing is $15 for size M, L, XL and $17 for 2XL.

I will be having an informational volunteer meeting about the tournament next Weds, April 14 at 6:00 PM at the Ground Round.  For anyone interersted in helping please attend this meeting as we will be discussing what needs to be done and start assigning tasks to those present.  We will probably just grab a table or two in the bar to meet and that way people can have a drink if they desire or what not.

We continue to move along with getting things ready for this great tournament and wanted to say that 'oh my gosh' it's only one month away.

Thanks to all the great support that we have received I'm already able to say that the Open Pro winner will receive at least $1000 and that the Advanced winner will walk away with a Mach5 Basket containing a custom tournament number plate.

Remember to pre-register and that you have to be a PDGA member to play, which you can also sign up for at the tournament if you don't get it done beforehand.

It is true that we have decided to pull Hidden Lake from the courses being
played for the North Star Throwdown. For a couple of months we have had
concerns about this course not being ready and those concerns were reinforced
after a visit there on Saturday. I'm sorry to those of you that wanted it
included, but the city of St. Augusta has not even cut the grass out there this
summer and has no plans to do any upkeep to the course in the near or far
future. It's a great course that needs some love and just isn't getting it.

So, in turn all players will be playing two rounds at Millstream instead, which
is great since that is a fantastic course.
The new schedule is as follows and will be updated on the website soon.
Pro's on Saturday Rd 1 at Riverside, Rd 2 at Millstream
Pro's on Sunday Rd 3 at Millstream followed by Final 9 at Millstream
Am's on Saturday Rd 1 at Millstream, Rd 2 at Riverside
Am's on Sunday Rd 3 at Millstream
Based on the amount of players we will probably be doing tee time starts on
Sunday starting at 7:30 AM, however that may change if we have fewer than 100
players in which we will then shotgun start.
Since we are having two rounds at Millstream we will have two different layouts,
so it's not all the same, just as usual for the Millstream Open that we normally
have.

Again, sorry to those who wanted to play Hidden Lake, it's just not up to par
for this event.

It is pretty rough out there and sad that the city has a jewel of a course and they cannot keep it up.  Whenever I am out there I always week a city employee sitting on his rear end by the pavilion, maybe they should get someone out there that is not a senior citizen and can actually do some work.  This could be the premier courses in the area.  I understand that it is an eye sore right now and not the image the Throw Down wants.  I am bummed about this because I was looking to make a strong finish there on sunday since I play the course fairly well.  For those that run tues and thurs leagues; is it possible to get more action out there to in-turn help keep the brush and grass down and to show the city that it will get use.  All in all I think everyone that is involved with the throw down have been working their tails off and doing a great job.  I look forward to playing.

I think it would be cool to play Calvary, Riverside and Mill Stream. I think Calvary is an underrated course.

Of course what ever you do is fine... just my 2 cents :)

The course schedule for Thursday night doubles is primarily focused on increasing player participation and Mike also did a great job working the rotation so that the Thursday prior to a local event we try to hit the course that will be used that weekend.  Using our weekly leagues as a battering ram through the bush isn't the right approach in my opinion. I would rather see (with the city's approval/supervision) scheduled work days where club members volunteer time and labor to clear out the fairways.  If that isn't an option with the city, we will just need to wait for the course to develop.  It will happen, it just might take a few years to get to the point where we can hold large events.

to Ken- I think that Calvary is OVER rated :)  That's probably because I remember what that course used to be like and it's disappointing to have lost so many cool holes out there over the years...

This is why I think it's under-rated... Calvary lost many cool holes... we compare Calvary now with Calvary at it's prime.

If you can imagine that there never was a Calvary... and there was a new course on Traverse and Cooper... you would be blown away at this great new course. Calvary is likely the 3rd best 18 hole course in the Saint Cloud area and we have some nice courses.

I talk to players from out of state who play Calvary but not any other local courses... I tell them they should also play Riverside and Mill Stream... the reaction... "you have 2 courses better than Calvary! You guys are lucky". The second reason I think Calvary is under-rated... we have Riverside and Mill Stream.

Does anyone know who is in charge of pin positions at Mill Stream?  There are some of us from the metro area coming up for a small function there this weekend.  Is it possible to get the pins put out at the long positions?  As you're planning two rounds out there for the NSTD event, I don't know if it's a possibility... but it doesn't hurt to ask!

There will be a lot of us out there all weekend playing disc golf.  I've recently added a few posts about it on the SCDGC forums.  Even if we can't get the longs, I hope some of you will come join us for a random doubles event to warm up for your big tournament coming up!

Thanks,
Nick

I hope nobody took my last post the wrong way.  I have no direspect for the people that run Leagues and Tournaments.  Adam, Mike, Amanda, Rick, PARKED crew (everyone I forgot) all do a great job and put in a tremendous amount of their personal time.

Picked up a great donation from Viking Coke yesterday.  Lots of water that will be put out in coolers during the rounds.
Also, talked to Famous Daves and they will be coming out to Riverside on Saturday to sell sandwiches with chips for $6 to the players and spectators.
We're getting close and it's getting very excited as final donations are arriving at our doorstep.
